The Hermaion

One hash. Witnessed. Numbered. Verified.

The tollbooth is space. The blockchain is time. Hermes stands at the crossroads. The hermaion is a fix in time, a temporal coordinate numbered, hashed, and sealed on the ledger. The ledger gives you a temporal coordinate which shows that early is the place you already occupy.

Satoshi in 2008:

"a peer-to-peer distributed timestamp server to generate computational proof of the chronological order of transactions."

Timestamp server. A timestamp server built by burning one petawatt-hour of electricity to establish the order of events. Dissipation of heat to establish truth.

The hermaion is a windfall dropped by the stranger Hermes at the gate, luck with a god's name written on it: an unpredictable 256-bit number that did not exist until that moment in time. A temporal coordinate. The entropy, paid for.

The I Ching thrown for each fix of the Series 1 hermaion used the coin cast method; with Series 2 the stalks are drawn the ancient way, where a nine falls three times as often as a six. Leading zeros are ignored with a one-pass SHA-256; each hex digit of the result is one line, bottom to top:

    6 – C  →  young yin
    D – F  →  old yang   · changing

Six digits, read bottom to top. The changing lines turn to their opposites, and a second hexagram appears from behind the first. A before and after.

Satoshi built chronological order. Faith is a coordinate you assign yourself; it has no witnesses. This is the witness. No one signs it. The heat signs it, the block seals it, and a fix that no god or man made stands in time — occupied.
